So if our skin is always shedding and growing new cells, why is it that we can’t shed a tattoo? Tattoos are created by inserting pigment (ink) deep into the skin’s layers. Tattoo ink is composed of carbon (e.g., India ink) and organic dyes mixed with metallic elements (e.g., iron oxide, aluminum, lead chromate). During a professional tattoo placement, pigment is injected directly into the skin’s middle layer (dermis) with a group of needles attached to an electric tattoo machine with different colored inks. The tattoo machine rapidly and repeatedly drives the needles in and out of the skin, injecting small droplets of ink into skin with every puncture. Tattoo ink is injected directly into the dermis because the skin cells there are more stable than those of the top layer (epidermis), which continually sheds throughout a person’s life. The tattoo ink stays in place with minimal or no fading or blurring overtime.
What you can do:
- Cover up. Once you have a tattoo you regret, there’s one thing to do: find a heavy concealer that offers plenty of coverage and stays put all day. Websites and stores that carry film and stage makeup carry a wide assortment.
What to avoid:
- Tattoo removal creams, balms or kits. These simply don’t work, as it’s just not possible to slough off enough layers of skin to remove the ink.
